Can I use poly rope for my electric cattle fence?
Poly rope is embedded with either copper, aluminium, or steel wire and is of the better quality. But I'm not sure if it is suitable for cattle.
You would have been better off asking this question in the Agriculture section (under science & mathmatics). The people who have answered your question obviously do not know what poly rope is.
I'm a small farmer, so I do know what it is.
Cattle are pretty respectful of electric. The poly rope can work fairly well for them. However poly rope has a big drawback. If you live in an area that gets a lot of wind, or even just moderate constant winds, I would not sugest you use poly rope.
The constant action of the wind causes the poly rope to sway and twist. It can break those thin metal filaments imbedded in the rope over time. Even just a matter of days if it's in the "right" spot to get a lot of action from the wind. Once the wires break, it's just plastic rope hanging there to keep cattle in.
On the plus side, poly rope is extremely easy to string, and do "repairs." You can just tie it together if it breaks to make a repair. It's also highly visable, which is great for animals.
I have used it to fence goats, and horses. I have replaced most of it witht he high tension electric however, as I live in a high and constant wind area.

P.S. Poly rope also collects snow loads, and can snap under the weight of the snow, if you live in a high snow area.
