What causes transmission slippage ?
I found the attached explanations:

These do not fully satisfy me since they seem to address only the mechanical transmission, not the hydraulic torque converter. (My feeling, since slippage is often when there is no need yet for a mechanical shift, a "part answer" would be that "valves are clogged", that "deflector blades are bent or loose in their hinges" and therefore those blades are directed in the "wrong' direction" (or similar) ?? I am as un-educated about the function of the torque converter as a fifth grader. When in your answer you use "terminology" please be kind, explain in simple English, as for your sister the liberal arts major.
At this time I am not yet interested in "how many $$ ?". Please address only the causes of "transmission slippage", and why repair is so expensive (e.g. as much as a new transmission).
automatic transmissions contain several cutches , which are controlled by hydraulic pressure. a leak or a restriction of the hydraulic circuit can result in inadequate pressure, the clutchs slip, and are ruined. or they can just wear out. the wrong fluid might cause slippage, too -dextron is more slippery than other kinds. A trans mechanic could tell you if your clutches are ruined by smelling the dipstick. the fluid gets burnt, by the slipping clutch's.
the torque converter is best thought of as a fluid coupling, one pump pushing the other along, by swirling the fluid. Theres more to it than that, the important points are that a faulty one will be a load on the engine at either low, or high RPM, the other thing is that the transmission mechanic will likely insist on replacing it, because it's impossible to clean out.
I'd consider getting a replacement at the wrecking yard. They will usually offer a brief (1month) garuntee - just enough to confirm that it'll work when they install it. look for one with fluid that doesn't smell as bad as yours does. the wrecking yard guys can tell you which will fit. Of course it'll be about the same age as yours....
I think the guarantee adds a lot of expense to auto trans repair. Installing what is called a "soft kit" will most likely cure the slipping. If it doesn't, they'd be in for a tough time finding why not. a soft kit consists of new clutches , seals and gaskets. (no gears or bearings). I've installed a couple, and had it work, even before studying how auto. transmissisions worked. Not easy, and if I do that again, and it doesn't work, I'd be inclined to just give up and get a replacement, rather than trying to work out why not. You can't try it, and then take it to a mechanic - they won't do it.
