Things To Consider When Choosing A Cello Case
A good cello case can give you peace of mind that your precious cello will be protected from inadvertent damage during your travels to your classes, lessons, practice sessions, and performances. If you are like the majority of cellists, you lug around your cello more than three times a week through short distance destinations. If you drive your own car, you would either lay your instrument in the back seat or in the trunk of the car. You might even have taken your cello on the bus or subway. How to choose your cello case would depend on your needs and your budget.
The bottomline requirement is that the cello case has to protect the instrument.
Hard-shell cases used to be very heavy but newer, lighter models are available that offer comparable protection from crushing pressure of 125 lbs or more.
New cello case models have weights ranging from 7 lbs. to 17 lbs.
Check the suspension padding inside the cases. These pads are key to ensuring that the cello does not get the brunt of vibrations when traveling. The bow holders should also be padded so as protect the whole stick, not just the tip and the frog.
It is important to test the locks and closures on the cello case. They have to remain secure and sealed even under pressure. The hard shell cases usually have latches, while fabric cases have zippered closures.
Handles and straps are important mobility considerations. Test the backpack straps if they are comfortable. The placement of the handles can make a world of difference in terms of comfort in lifting the instrument.
Most new cello cases come with wheels that ideally should work well on both hard and carpeted surfaces.

Although the high prices are cause for concern, most cellists know that it pays to select a quality case rather than pay the costs of repairing the cello, or purchasing replacement cello cases.
