Makeup air is vital to the health and welfare of a building and its occupants. If the proper amount of makeup air is not introduced in a space, consequences can range from exterior doors that are difficult to open or close, to the overlapping carbon monoxide in space for smoke hoods that do not really control the pollutants that were intended to control. In addition, the outside air that is put into a building to "offset" the amount of air that is exhausted is a very significant impact on the ability of cooling and heating.
Insufficient makeup air can lead to increased building infiltration and higher energy costs, not to mention unhappy building owners and occupants uncomfortable.
While there are no facts and data to show that many buildings provide the right amount of makeup air, we can say that there are probably a large part do not have enough makeup air. And there is a solution that is available to all buildings. Each building must be analyzed with a careful calculation of equilibrium air and evaluated based on the diversity of sources of exhaust and air infiltration.
The kind of makeup air equipment used and their size usually depends on the weather. Wetlands of the country require much higher capacity drives outdoor air dehumidification.
